We’ve all felt it—the desire for bookshelves that warm up the room with meaningful items (finally, a place for family photos, favorite books, and travel mementos!) and well-proportioned design. And yet, getting started is the hardest part.
By sharing a few tips and tricks and answering frequently asked questions, we hope to help take some of the guesswork (and headache!) out of bookshelf accessory shopping and sorting. My shelves are empty… now what?
You’re off to a great start if you’re beginning with a blank canvas! If you’re not, first things first: remove everything from your shelves and create a staging area with your decorative items. Next, consider using pieces that you might have been initially unsure about—you never know what will happen when you get creative. Once you’ve organized your décor items, have fun! Start by trying out different spots for your pieces; move them around from shelf to shelf to see what you like best. Remember, it’s completely ok to take breaks and style again later… everyone needs the chance to gain a fresh perspective!
The Perfect Balance
You want interesting, but not cluttered. The key? Don’t try to cram too many pieces on your shelves. Give yourself permission to not use every accessory you have on hand. It’s ok to be picky. At Moore House Interiors, our motto is “less is more and—the simpler, the better!”

Books, framed photos, and greenery accents make perfect shelf accessories. Choose items that range in texture, color, height, and width. Variety is important and keeps the display visually interesting. Also, choose frames in different shapes and sizes for interest and versatility.
Color Theme?
A color theme is completely preferential. Bold, colorfully decorated shelves are just as interesting as soft, neutral hues. Stay true to your taste and the atmosphere you desire for your home. Most importantly, go with the look that inspires you.
Coffee Table Books
The options for coffee table books are endless and exciting—and can be deeply meaningful and personal. Collect books that represent your hobbies, travels, and interests, including antique books or your favorite novels. For example, don’t buy books based solely on their size or color if you care nothing about the subject matter.
Fill a lower shelf with a stack of family read-aloud books and children’s storybook titles so that little hands can reach them. Most importantly, let your home—and your shelves—reflect you.
